The EL department at HTHS works with students whose native language is one other than English.  We help these emerging multilingual students to develop the ability to comprehend, speak, read and write in English. Students in our newcomer program take an ESOL language course, which is designed as an introductory course to provide students with coping skills and cultural information to help them understand the contexts of language use. Students are taught how to function in a limited way in English to meet their immediate needs.  Students also take Study Skills, where we aim to provide each student with skills and strategies designed to facilitate academic success in both English and other content areas.  Our ultimate goal is to expand the students' knowledge of the world, other people, and cultures; and to develop an increased sense of accomplishment, personal pride, and self-confidence through achievement in English.  We also offer support to teachers and students in their content area classes as needed.
